A FeatherNet BBS
Introduction
------------
This is a quick attempt at getting a quick text file together that turned
out not to be too quick.
This set up will use the front end loader of 'FrontDoor'. There are
several setup procedures on PcBoard type message bases that use
different front end loaders such as Blinkley Term, D'Bridge, and others.
I could never find one for FrontDoor, so here goes! I have
often complained about documentation that came with programs. I never
realized just how complicated it can be.
Now I have walked a mile in their shoes no more complaining about
docs.
Hopefully this will be simple enough for even the beginner to install.
Some of the text here and examples may be boring for those that are
fimilar with NetMail.
If so, it will just be a little light reading for you.
This Document is basically written to assist you in installing a Fido
compatible system. I was overrun with documentation that made little
sense to someone just starting. I will try and clarify many areas that
were confusing to me and hopefully save you some wear and tear, both on
your system and your brain.....
You should first make sure that you can link up to a Fido system
locally. If not you will have to call long distance each night to
pick up mail. This may be an important factor considering just a
few conferences can easily become quite large and your telephone bill
could be expensive.
You should have at least 5 meg of disk space left if not more!
If you are that short on disk space, remember that echo'd conferences
can generate large files themselves. Should you already be that short
of space, perhaps you should do some file cleaning or obtain a
larger hard drive. The Following files will take (un-zipped) about
2 to 3 megs! not to mention the original zips you will have.

-------------* Necessary Files *--------------
Your first assignment is to obtain the following files from a BBS.
FD199C.ZIP or FD199C_1.ZIP (or .lzh etc)
FD199C_2.ZIP
FD199C_3.ZIP
NODELIST.xxx <- the xxx's will vary!
EDITNL.ZIP
CONFMAIL.ZIP or CONF_400.zip
IP131.ZIP
BNU170.ZIP
PROPACK.ZIP
FDSEC199.ZIP
Now a brief desciption of each files:
FN199c.ZIP Try and obtain the C version, it is the latest greatest
version out. It is a very reliable software. It is a large
file at approx. 500K. This is the program that will be called
the 'mailer'. It will handle your receiving of mail and
delivering mail for you.
Nodelist.xxx Each week the nodelist.xxx will be updated as new people join
Fido and others are removed. The file extension will vary
depending on the date it is updated. This is used by FrontDoor
to reference who and how to call members in the Fido area.
FrontDoor will not even load with out it! It is also a very
large file at approx. 500K and is updated every Friday.
EDITNL.ZIP Since the NODELIST.xxx is updated each week and you will
want to have the most current version at all times,
downloading the NODELIST.xxx every week would not be
desirable. Therefore, every Friday when a new NODELIST.xxx
is made there is also a file called NODEDIFF.xxx made too.
The NODEDIFF (NODElist DIFFerences) file is just the
updates to the NODELIST.xxx. Until you get a fido node
number of your own, you will need to call every week and
obtain the newest NODEDIFF file to keep your nodelist
current! After you are receiving mail, most hubs will
send you this list every Friday night with mail. EDITNL
is a program that will edit your nodelist and make changes
to it. (EDITNL=EDIT NodeList). Place this file in your
c:\fd\nodelist directory. DO NOT skip a week from doing this
as EDITNL will see that you are missing an update and refuse
to run. After you run the EDITNL program you will need to
recompile your nodelist using 'FDNC.EXE'. This is easily done
in your nightly event and can be set to run automatically
which we will show you later.
FeatherNet BBS / Fido Net Mail Setup Guide Page 2
CONFMAIL.ZIP Confmail version 4.0 is what you want, some BBS's list this as
either of the two file names. This is used to take mail that
frontdoor will be receiving, unarch it (Unpack, unzip etc)
and 'toss' it into the proper directories.
IP131.ZIP InterPCB (Inter-PcBoard). When Confmail tosses mail
into the directories those messages will have a .msg
file extension. (ie 2.msg 3.msg etc) InterPCB (IP) will
take those and merge them into the PcBoard formatted message
file you should already have in the directory.
PROPACK.ZIP Propack is a program written by Sam Smith and provides
an excellent way to manage your message bases. National
NetMail can grow very large in a hurry. Use this to keep
those message files down to size.
BNU170.ZIP BNU fossil driver (or X00 fossil) is required for Frontdoor.
FDSEC199.ZIP FrontDoorSECure. This is a program that you can run in your
nightly maintanence BEFORE you toss any mail or allow your event
to execute any file found in your mailers file area. If someone
happens to send you a file or mail that you are not expecting
the results could be rather bad since it is possible those
persons would not send you something very nice.
Please remember if these programs are shareware and request or require
registration, you should follow those requirements.
FeatherNet BBS / Fido Net Mail Setup Guide Page 3
-------------* Setting up FrontDoor *------------
Create a directory at your root directory called FD.
ie MD FD <enter>. If you prefer You may create the 'FD' directory on a
drive/path of your choosing. If you choose to do this, you *MUST* ensure
the path is correct in the various batch files and system filed which will
be covered below.
Copy your fn119C.zip file(s) into the 'FD' directory and unzip them.
Now you will need to run the 'setup.exe' program that came with FrontDoor.
It will show you several menus. I wish I could tell you which ones
to just set and be done with it but that would be impossible.
The docs that come with frontdoor are over 100 pages long, and
to go over each of them here would add those 100 pages to this document
as well. OTHER THAN WHAT IS LISTED BELOW!, just use common sense and
reference the Frontdoor docs.
You will need to create seperate sub-diretories under the FD directory.
c:\fd\files
c:\fd\packets
c:\fd\nodelist
c:\fd\mail
c:\fd\outbound
In the setup configuration you will need to add these directories under
the GLOBAL header FILENAMES section. Those questions will ask
Location of Files? , you would enter C:\FD\FILES
Location of Nodelist, you would enter C:\FD\NODELIST
etc!
Next, since frontdoor answers your calls ahead of the BBS, your BBS
software has no way of knowing what baud rate the incoming call
is at! Under the section of MAILER and subsection of ERRORLEVELS
enter the examples here, This is required!
Baud Rate errorlevel
~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~
300 200
1200 205
1275 210
2400 215
4800 220
9600 225
19200 230
38400 235
rec'd mail 100
Create Bat NO
FeatherNet BBS / Fido Net Mail Setup Guide Page 4
Next under the Header of MANAGER and subheading of EVENTS you will need
to Insert a new event. For the TAG press X which indicated an external
event. It will ask you the time/days to run etc, and also an error level to
exit with. Put 255 for an errorlevel. Additional events maybe added, but
each should have a seperate errorlevel. This will be referenced later.
Also, if you run a HST modem and you plan on taking calls that will
connect at 14,400 baud rate you will need to go to the
MODEM section and under MESSAGES sub-section Change the
19200 entry from CONNECT 19200 to CONNECT 14400.
Answer all the other configuration selections as best you can.
FeatherNet BBS / Fido Net Mail Setup Guide Page 5
-------------* FrontDoor Control Files *-------------
You will need a series of control files that frontdoor will use.
The two text files listed here are called ROUTE.FD and FDNODE.CTL and
discussion of compiling the nodelist.
*---------*
===========* Route.FD*===========
*---------*
Next you will need a file in the FD directory called
ROUTE.FD. Just use your favorite text editor and create one.
This is a simple command file but it works. As your
requirements change you may need to change this file
but this is a general 'fix all' start. In this
file as well as others we will discuss ";" 's (semi-colons) are
always ignored. (same as rem statements in batch files)
; Start the file here.
;
; Sample route.fd file
;
schedule @ all
; end of file
** Make sure this file in in your FD directory (C:\FD) **
*------------*
================* Fdnode.CTL *==================
*------------*
Next you will need a file called FDNODE.CTL
This file need to be placed in your FD\NODELIST directory.
It is also a text file. See if local boards can provide you with
one (preferred), or else create one using this example.
Sample FNNODE.CTL follows
Remarks Remarks Remarks
<------------------------------------------------------>
USE ZONE 1/170 <REPLACE THE 170 WITH 'YOUR' AREA'S NET NUMBER!
dial / 011-
1-918-224 224
1-918-226 226 <=== etc etc etc, list ALL area codes and
1-918-227 227 prefixes of BBS's that handle
1-918-228 228 Fido netmail in your LOCAL calling area.
end <=== 'end' is required!
<=== One Blank line.
cost .50 1.50
1-918-224 0
1-918-226 0 <=== List all other area codes you listed above
1-918-227 0 under the 'dial / 011-' section and place
1-918-378 .20 the 'cost of a one minute call to that exchange.
end <=== Place this to show the end of this part of the file
<------------------------------------------------------>
(Ensure all remarks are removed)
FeatherNet BBS / Fido Net Mail Setup Guide Page 6
That is all the file requires.
Please note, that is this file is not properly edited, frontdoor will
possibly try called local BBS's in your area by dialing a 1 then the
area code. This file simply tells front door what area you are in, and
when it should dial a 1 + area code for a BBS and when it should just
dial the number.
------------* Compiling the Nodelist.xxx *-------------
Now you have all the necessary control files in place. Again, make
sure the NODELIST.xxx file is in the C:\FD\NODELIST directory. You must now
run the 'FDNC.EXE' program in the C:\FD directory. This will compile
the NODELIST.XXX file to another file that FrontDoor will use.
DO NOT delete the NODELIST.xxx file after compilation.
FDNC=(FrontDoor Nodelist Compiler)
------------------* Batch Files *-----------------
Now you will need a series of batch files to link all of this
with your BBS. Make sure you run the FeatherNet config file
and select 'USE FRONTEND TO LOAD FNET' to Y when you get ready
for complete testing.
You may use one of several approaches to batch files.
I prefer to use ONE long batch file that runs the Frontend
and the BBS. You may choose to use several that are linked
together. Each will be shown here.
First the multiple batch files.
Now you will need to start configuring the Confmail and IP programs
to toss, import, and export your netmail.
--------------* ConfMail Setups *------------
CONFMAIL setups:
Confmail REQUIRES a separate directory for each mail area! That is
correct! a separate directory!
FIrst you will need to create a text file wherever Confmail.exe program
is found. (c:\fnet is where I have mine)
This text file is called CONFIG.DOG
It is required and should follow this format!
*------------*
============* CONFIG.DOG *=============
<-Remarks---------Remarks-------------->
MAIL C:\FD\MAIL\
FILES C:\FD\FILES\ <-REMOVE remarks from this file!-------->
That is the end of the CONFIG.DOG file. It is simply 3 lines long.
You will also need to write a AREAS.BBS file.
This file used by confmail simply tells confmail where the directories
are located that contain the indiviual message bases.
It must also reside in the same directory that CONFMAIL.EXE is.
Here is a sample AREAS.BBS file
You should now configure your FDSECURE program (fdsec199.zip) file.
This is a program that will execute before any mail processing is done.
It will read your Front Door Log file and determine the sources for all
files in that directory. If any files, ie *.pkt's *.com *.exe *.zip's
etc are found in there that you do not specify as receiving from
a known source, those files will automatically be moved to another
directory you specify BEFORE your nightly maintenance is ran.
This program is optional as it is not required for Front Door, CONFMAIL
etc to run, it is highly recommended! There have been causes of
'mail bombs' sent through mailers, these instances are rare but possible,
therefore a little caution is a good idea. Setting up FDSEC is a easy,
but I have included my fnsecure.cfg file here for reference. You will need
to edit it for your proper paths etc.
------* Nightly Mail Tossing & Event Scheduling.*-----------
Next you will need an external batch file you will set to run in your
event. I call my file MAIL.BAT. This file run nightly and will use CONFMAIL
to import messages to the proper directories, then use IP (interPCB)
to merge those messages (2.msg 3.msg etc) into the message bases.
Next the mail batch file will use CONFMAIL to export mail that your
users have entered and toss them to the FD directories where FrontDoor
will prepare them for shipment.
Here is a sample of my mail.bat. You may also include any other nightly
maintenance that you need to do in this file, or create another batch
file for your other nightly maintenance that may rbe necessary to run
at midnight.
REM Remember as we stated previously, every Friday you will need to
rem obtain a file called NODEDIFF.xxx which is the FIDO update list.
rem The following will check and see if is exist and if so, will
rem edit your nodelist and recompile it for you automatically.
CD\FD\FILES
IF NOT EXIST NODEDIFF.* GOTO CONT
-----------* Getting your own nodenumber from Fido *---------------
After you have everything running smoothly, you will need to
request your own Fido Node number from the REC or the 'host' in your area.
REC is the Regional Echo Chairman. He is the person that brings
mail into your area. Almost without exception, he will require
you submit your request using your FrontDoor! This ensures him
that you have a working system before he will assign you a number.
You will need to find out what his name is or his Node number.
If his node number is for example 170/200 you should probably
use a node number for yourself such as 170/999 where the 999
is a non-existant number and will be considered temporary until
your official number is made. 2222/999 or 243/999 are other examples.
Next run the SETUP program in the FD directory and under the GLOBAL
section ADDRESS subsection enter that temporary number there!
Next load up Front Door using your new batch files and press
<ALT> E this will load Frontdoors editor Press <INSERT>
In the TO: section enter the REC's number or his name, either will
work.
Under RE: Nodenumber request. Please note that while you are entering
in the RE line, you will have a set of options shown in a window.
You probably should send this DIRECT, PRIVATE, CRASH Select those by
<CTRL> and the options shown.
Next start typing your request.
Sample letter.
Dear Mr. Smith,
I am offically applying for my Fido node number. Per requirements,
I am making this request via my mailer.
My BBS hours of operation is xxxxxx
My BBS Telephone Number is xxx-xxx-xxxx
My max baud rate I support is xxxxx
My home voice number is xxx-xxx-xxxx
Thank you.
Now to exit from the editor press <ALT> Q for quit!
Frontdoor should start trying to send your request for you. It may
take a week or two to get your nodenumber. If all else fails, call his
BBS and leave a message or press <ALT> F for forced poll using Frontdoor
and enter the REC's node number to attempt to pick up any waiting mail.
That should be about all there is to it. (Famous last words (grin))
If anything is lacking or confusing please let me know,
I will consider adding it to this document to help others.
